11. Outside Underarm Turn
As in the previous figure, he
pulls her towards him before....
....sending her away.
Most underarm turns are to the outside but could also be done cross-body or inside. Click here to view the underarm turn in east coast swing. For an example of an outside underarm turn in a dance form other than swing, see the sample in Polish-American Polka.
The underarm turn is common to almost all couple dances, a notable exception being Argentine tango. Some flavor is given to the turn if the leader pulls the follower in before both sending her away and moving back himself.
Leader: The leader's footwork is the regular basic. On 3, the leader turns the follower closckwise so that she finishes her turn as he taps forward on 5.
Follower: The follower:
- taps forward with her left foot on 1
- Holds on 2
- Lets go with her left and turns clockwise as led and steps with her right foot facing away from the lead on 3
- Holds on 4
- Turns to face the leader, taps back with her left foot on 5
- Reconnects with the leader and holds on 6
