6. Back ochos & variations

Forward

Side

Pivot & step back. From
here, the 3 variations proceed.

Three variations proceed from one interesting beginning segment: starting from a forward step L the leader steps side R and the follower side L Both the dancers then twist and step behind on their next foot (follower’s R, leader’s L), taking care to stay the same distance from each other. Then the leader changes weight with a small side step R while the follower pivots on her previous step R.

In each instance the leader’s above step sequence: back L, side R, plus his first step L in any of the variations below is danced in the 1, 3, 1 rhythm.

From this point the variations are:

#1 Leader walks out on follower’s right side to her syncopated (1, 3, 1) cross.

#2 Leader walks out on follower’s left side to his side step R, then forward once again as in version #1, his R foot on her right side to her syncopated (1, 3, 1) cross.

#3 Leader walks out on follower’s left side in a series of quick steps (1, 3, 1, 3, 1, 3, 1) around her. The follower walks backward all slows.

Leader: from his forward step L on the follower’s left side, pivot sharply to the left and step R in place, walk back L, side R, forward L around F, holding her on axis for leaders’s side step R. He then steps side R and walks out L on follower’s right side to her cross. Leader is essentially dancing the grapevine pattern around the follower

Follower: back L, back R, pivot back L, back R, pivot back L, back right, cross.
