Basket Whip or Lock Whip (8-count pattern)

8-count Generally: The 8-count foot rhythm ("8-count") in west coast swing is not much different than the 6-count foot rhythm. Simply add a "walk walk" between the triple steps to add the extra 2 counts. Remember, "counts" are even measures of time like the second hand on a watch, and "steps" may be even or uneven timewise:

Basket Whip Using 8-count: The gent "shows" his right hand to the lady just before count 2 and she then knows to take that hand so that the couple are in 2 hand position.

At this point, the gent has stepped left on count 2 and is out of the slot but still has both hands of the lady. Because the gent is out of the slot, the lady knows that she will proceed past him.

With gentility and concern, on count 3 the gent lifts the arms over the lady's head (she is now slightly past him) and on count 4, he both walks behind her and lowers her arms, but he goes a little further than directly behind her, he is a little offset, because the lady's next step is backward and he needs to be out of the way (out of the slot) to allow her to pass.

The ladies part is 2 steps forward, triple step, 2 steps backward, triple step.

Caramba! This is tough stuff. Be patient with yourself. The next page deals with a standard whip. We included the basket whip prior to the standard whip because notwithstanding the word "standard", the standard whip is a tad more difficult than the basket whip.

Lady travels the extent of
man's reach on 3&4 (triple
step) and then must walk
directly backward on 5-6.
The gent has to get out of
her way (out of the slot)...

...like this. Around count 5, the
gent will let go of her right hand
